One of our Year 6 Eco Team members came up with the idea of a competition for doing some Switch Off Fortnight homework. He decided to make this poster and put it up all around the school and explained it to each class.

Switch Off Fortnight 2018

Burradon Community Primary School will be holding their Switch Off Fortnight during June 2018.

The Eco-Team will be analysing the schools Energy usage over the fortnight and comparing it with a typical two week period.  We are hoping for a noticeable reduction!

What is Switch-Off Fortnight?
Schools across the UK will be taking part in Switch-Off Fortnight, an EDF Energy campaign run through its education programme the Pod. Switch Off Fortnight is designed to encourage young people to think about how we use energy and to show them how and why it’s important to use it more efficiently e.g. to save money on energy bills, to help the UK reduce its energy demand and also to help to reduce the amount of carbon we emit etc. As well as the educational benefits, Switch-Off Fortnight is a good opportunity to get the whole school working together on a great project. We’re hoping that being part of Switch-Off Fortnight will help us make our school more energy efficient.

We are encouraging children to share what they learn during Switch-Off Fortnight with their families and to help them save energy at home too!

Do you like to Save Money?
Saving energy could help you save money by reducing your energy bills! Schools that have taken part in Switch Off Fortnight in previous years have saved between 10% and 20%* in energy costs, which has meant they could spend more money on books and equipment and in some cases additional teaching staff. By trying some of the ideas your child learns during the campaign at home, not only will your child feel supported in what they’re doing at school, you could save money on your home fuel bills as well! I hope you’ll encourage your child to get involved in Switch-Off Fortnight and support them in trying these activities at home too– e.g. by making simple steps like switching off the lights and turning down the thermostat!

Year 2 went on a hunt outdoors to find 10 facts about energy use. Then they turned their facts into posters to inform people about energy. See below... now all those wind turbines make sense, we live in the windiest country in Europe! (June 2018)
