All children in Key Stage 1 have daily English and maths sessions and we consider it to be one of our priorities that children leave school with secure basic skills which will serve them well in the future.
Maths
At Key Stage 1, we follow the National Curriculum 2014 for Mathematics and follow the mastery approach using a mixture of the White Rose Mathematics and NCETM spine for our planning and lesson designs. Alongside this, children consolidate their number facts and basic skills through the Mastering Number programme which takes place 4 times a week. We also have dedicated daily mental maths sessions to develop and enhance these key skills. Maths websites to support learning at home are on this website and we encourage the use of Times Tables Rockstars and Hit the Button to reinforce mental maths skills. Children are given homework once a week to reinforce work completed in class. Children are taught to skip count and learn their 2, 5, 10 and 3x tables through games and songs.
Reading
Children in Year 1 have phonics lessons following the Essential Letters and Sounds Phonic Scheme. The aim of ELS is to get all children to read well, quickly. It teaches children to read by identifying the phonemes (the smallest unit of sound) and graphemes (the written version of the sound) within words and using these to read words. ELS is taught daily.
At Key Stage 1, we follow the National Curriculum 2014 for reading. Children follow the Oxford Reading Tree Reading Scheme. All children in Key Stage 1 have an individual and a whole class guided reading session each week. Children are exposed to a range of reading for pleasure texts through whole class story time. Children receive a weekly reading book each week which must be read at home and this forms part of the weekly homework. Incentives such as house points and stickers are given to promote reading.
Spelling and grammar
To provide a systematic and clear approach to phonics and spelling, our Year 2 class use the Essential Letters and Sounds Spelling scheme to learn basic spelling rules and patterns. Grammar sessions are planned weekly.
Creative Curriculum
Lessons are delivered through our creative curriculum which changes regularly and is planned to provide progression and challenge. All pupils receive at least two hours of high quality Physical Education each week. We use the Outdoor Area and the Woodland Area to support learning. We also use visitors and trips outside of school to bring learning alive.
Please contact the school directly if you require more information regarding our curriculum or if you require a paper copy of any of the information on this page.
